The Ladder of Success

Jul 18, 2025

Most successful people know that a bully will only last so long. A person without morals will dissolve into nothing at some point. And that ‘get rich quick’ person will experience a “get poor quick” turnaround sooner than later.

To be a winner in life takes discipline, a steady hand, and the kind of morality and caring about others to sustain your future. Running over the other guy may get you somewhere in the short term, but in the long run, you will find yourself at the bottom of the rungs.

A Top Executive Explains Your Hospitality Quotient

Danny Meyer is the founder of the Union Square Hospitality Group, LLC. He describes what the company looks for in new employees: he named it the HQ, the hospitality quotient. While an IQ reflects one's aptitude for learning, a person’s HQ is the degree to which someone is happier when they provide happiness for someone else."

Meyer said the company looks for six qualities, or emotional skills, that define the applicant’s hospitality quotient. They are:

  • Integrity
  • Optimism
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Work ethic
  • Empathy
  • Self-awareness

The company places great priority on integrity. According to a statement by Meyer, he considers integrity “the most important emotional skill, because it shows the judgment to do the right thing.”

Soft Skills

In today’s world of AI and high-stakes competitive business ventures, it is apparent that soft skills such as the above will become even more necessary in the marketplace.

Along with those, it is apparent that people with additional soft skills such as getting along with others, offering creative ideas to a project, and working together on advancing a project rather than grandstanding all the time, will be more desired in an employee than intellectual abilities.

In our rapidly changing world, everyone has access to knowledge and AI databases, but what makes an employee different and stand out will be their HQ. In other words, if everyone has access to all the data, then they are all on a level playing field. What will propel one person ahead of the pack is their HQ.

Finding people who excel at such soft skills, however, is easier said than done, according to Meyer. Soft skills might "sound like second grade stuff" on the surface, but bosses who intentionally hire candidates who possess them will benefit greatly, Meyer added. "These are people who, in addition to being really good at the technical thing they were hired to do, whatever that job is, they're amazing at going over and beyond and doing things that were unexpected."

Weird "exercise" reverses brain aging in 7 seconds

This weird, viral trend is reversing the brain aging of seniors – starting in 7 seconds…

7 seconds after doing this "sponge brain" technique, elderly men and women show common symptoms of:

  • Increased learning speed…
  • Improved memory and retention…
  • Heightened alertness & energy…
  • Eliminated brain fog and fatigue…

…and much more.

We made the mistake of underestimating this simple technique…

However, the brains of these seniors begin to de-age before our eyes.

As if their brains are turning back to literal "sponges" – similar to the developing brains of toddlers.

Run With These Ideas

While standing where you are on the ‘cutting edge’ of your career, pay attention to developing and nurturing your HQ. You could be the one that runs the sprint all the way to the goalpost. And back again!

  1. Beef up the caring side of your personality and let it shine without being overbearing or obnoxious
  2. Let others go first! Stand back or aside, and wait your turn to shine. You don’t always have to be the guy in the front road raising your hand with the answers.
  3. Be careful who you step on going up the ladder….

The Ladder of Success

People sometimes overlook the importance of soft skills so they can manifest immediate success.

The question remains, however, how long will that success endure?

If you are looking for long-term results, incorporate soft skills into your behavior now. Having a reputation for success, as well as being an executive with understanding, empathy, and caring about others will get you further along in life and in manifesting your career goals!

Just remember the ladder of success, going up and down, when you are making those tricky decisions about other people!
