Setting Goals Is Good for Your Mental Health
The first step is to understand how important goal setting is for your mental health. Are you dedicated to keeping your body in good condition by setting goals of healthy food choices, exercising, and getting enough rest?
That’s great! But do you also realize that setting goals improves your mental health? According to researchers, “the best way to make yourself happy is by making goals, and ones that are achievable.”
Make a Plan
Just as important as setting a goal is having a plan of how you’re going to get there. No matter your type of goals, ask yourself how you are going to accomplish them.
Break it down! Having big resolutions and plans for yourself is a great start, but to get there, create steps of smaller, more achievable objectives. Achieving the small steps instantly propels you on to the next one, then the next, and then finally you have arrived, completing your major goal.
Put it on paper! List the daily activities needed, in order of importance and necessity. Then list your objectives for the day.
Keep it in your pocket and refer to it a couple of times during the day to see if you are on track. What you did not finish, move to the next day. Keep this up for a week and you will be astounded at what you have accomplished!
Achieve Your Goals
There is no other feeling like when you have accomplished a goal. Your mental health is boosted and therefore so is your physical health. They operate together!
It can be the greatest feeling in the world to have succeeded, and that feeling can be replayed in your mind regularly to help you achieve more goals! “Goals can do wonders for your mental health,” says Rebecka Warren, Clinic Manager at Centerstone. “They can add more happiness to your life.”

Gratitude
Completing goals is huge! You deserve accolades! And you feel happy! And grateful! You know, and others know, the hard work you put in to achieve your goals, and you also have gratitude for the ups and downs along the way, as well as when you completed the goal!
Gratitude opens up even more doors for you!
When you appreciate others, and acknowledge their help on your journey, you are letting the world know that you understand you are not a superhero, but someone that understands the laws of gratitude.
Successful people know the power of gratitude and have learned to never take your successes for granted. Always thank those who helped you get there!
Finally…
Take a breather and assess the process of goal setting, working your way through the smaller steps as you were able to accomplish the larger goal, and spending some time enjoying your success.
The final step is to take a break and write down what you have learned; and note what you learned and will keep in that process, and what you will let go.
Make a list of your next goals and start with the old-fashioned pros and cons list of your new project.
Then make a second list of do’s and don’ts of previously learned lessons, mistakes, and successes.
Pause and Check Your Mental Health
Take a look at your mental health at this stage. Write down how you feel, what you have learned about yourself, and what personal tools you can now store in your tool chest. How did this goal-setting process work for you? Take note of how you felt at the start and how you feel now.
In our rush to achieve and produce, it is easy to let our physical and mental health be pushed to the back burner.
However, it is imperative to make good health decisions on all levels to help implement and achieve your goals.
Making a list of goals is easy and can be done in 30 minutes or less. It’s a great 30-minute investment for the rest of your life!
