If Life Seems Dark, How Do You Stay in the Light?

Aug 29, 2025

To live and stay in the light means to live according to higher thoughts or principles, to be aware of others, to maintain a positive attitude, and to be kind and generous to those who are struggling. Of course, living in a state of higher consciousness when you are down and out might be easier said than done. When things are not going your way, or your life takes a wrong turn, it can be difficult to think about living in the light. But there are good reasons to give it a try.

What does it mean to live in the light?

When you are knocked down, take a few deep breaths, lick your wounds, and get up and get going.  If you can maintain a more positive mindset, it will pay off in multiple, and sometimes unexpected, ways.

Living in the Light appeals to a broad spectrum of people. Historically, folks from many diverse religions and spiritual paths have agreed that living in the light is doable and makes a difference. In today’s society, many teachers and books help you to achieve this mindset.

Deepak Chopra shares from his new book, Living in the Light, that “Stripped of its religious connotations, the light refers to consciousness. The more conscious you are, the more you are living in the light. This clear and simple definition takes us to the heart of Yoga, which is an entire philosophy aimed at raising the consciousness of everyone.” By the concept of living in the light, the assumption is that you live in this state of mind before, during, and after setbacks. That you live in the Light all the time, and that you are more aware of your thoughts and of others throughout every day of your life.

Chopra further explains that even though every person has had experiences of light and happiness, there are still dark experiences of pain and tragedy, all of which are a part of life on earth. “Nonetheless, the light of life is always with you because consciousness is your very nature, your true self.” This is exactly the right attitude to maintain in your life. You are your consciousness, and that cannot be taken away from you, until or unless something happens that you physically lose consciousness, as in when you pass out of the body or sustain an injury or disease to the brain.

I bet you didn't know this about the human brain…

Scientists have discovered your brain has a natural "flushing" system that washes away mental fog.

The problem?

As we age, this system gets clogged with cellular debris.

Like a shower drain filled with hair.

But here's the exciting part...

A team of neuroscientists has discovered an unusual 8-second "ear pinch" that helps activate your brain's natural cleaning system.

It's already helping thousands of Americans think more clearly.

But, here’s the most fascinating part.

When you do this 8-second "ear pinch" it…

  • Works with your brain's natural chemistry
  • Starts clearing fog from day one
  • Requires zero supplements

How do you live in the consciousness of light?

Many scholars and researchers have stated that if you change how you think about things, there will be brilliant moments of awareness and answers to problems that awaken your consciousness. From an article in June 2024, Psychology Today, try this concept of Flashlight/Floodlight Thinking: “If you turn off all the lights in a room and shine a flashlight on the wall, you will see a small disk of light. This disk is your next email, text, meeting, or phone call. If you place a floodlight on the floor, it will illuminate the entire wall…you can see the entire picture, or your holistic vision of whatever issue you are grappling with.” Each day, you use our small beam of flashlight to focus on the next issue of the day, the next email, the next meeting.

But when you use a floodlight to illuminate the issue, you can see the big picture, and can then access your intuition to understand the beginning, the middle, and the end of a project.

When your creativity kicks in, you begin to use resources from outside of yourself to include more ideas from teammates in the office or at home.

You are then able to live in the Light of consciousness that uses all the faculties of your brain, and you begin to feel and express hope, wisdom, and positive results.

Try out the Floodlight by taking these steps to success:

Step 1: Use your imagination. Close your eyes and imagine you are in a dark room, with only a small flashlight in the middle of the floor, which is poorly lighting a small space around it. In this light, you see a leg of a chair, a small circle of carpeting, a table leg, and parts of your shoes. Not much else. From this point of view, you cannot determine what the larger picture is. You do not know where you are, where you have been, or where you are going. You realize that you need more light before you can figure out what to do next.

Step 2: Now, close your eyes and imagine you are in a room that is brightly lit by a large flashlight lying on the floor. In this light, you can see all the furnishings of the room, the chairs, desks, and yourself. You also see windows, doors, file cabinets, pictures on the walls, your briefcase, your phone on the desk, and a stack of papers. In this light, you can see the entire picture and you know where you have been, where you are now, and where you are going.

Step 3: Now you can understand that during the day, when you find your mind drifting back to the flashlight scenario of trying to get answers with too little information, you can pull out your floodlight of intuition and turn it on the big picture to see the information you need.

By shining enough light on all aspects of your life, you can live in the light more and struggle less.

When things look dark, shine the floodlight over yourself, your body, in and through your mind, and let the Light flood your mind with ideas, inventions, answers, and peace and harmony.
